John G. I. Clarke
John GI Clarke is an Equality, Justice and Peace Monitor, social worker and writer whose work explores the human stories behind struggles for equality, justice, peace and human dignity.
A conscientious objector during the apartheid era, he has spent more than four decades working at the intersection of social justice, human rights, environmental protection and public accountability. His work has included supporting whistleblowers, documenting human rights violations and accompanying communities struggling to defend their rights.
He is the author of The Promise of Justice and has contributed extensively to public debate through journalism, commentary, documentary filmmaking and his YouTube channel, icosindaba.
His inspiration for writing Molly Blackburn: Witness for Justice arose from his conviction that Molly’s extraordinary contribution to South Africa’s liberation struggle deserved to be more fully remembered and understood. As a fellow social worker committed to the ethical imperative of standing alongside people facing injustice, Clarke recognised in Molly’s life an enduring example of what it means to put compassion into action.
His biography seeks not only to recover a neglected chapter of South African history, but also to inspire a new generation to rediscover the values of courage, integrity, solidarity and our common humanity.
